From the late 1600s to the early 1800s, affluent families would send their male offspring on a “Grand Tour” to explore Europe, as a form of higher education in art, history, language, architecture, culture, and literature. It later went on to become popular amongst women, who had not always had the privilege of independence that their male counterparts took for granted, as well as art dealers, artists, designers and collectors.
